Identifying a Pinball Machine

Look underneath first

Lift the playfield and the machine tells you its own generation. Score reels, stepper units and banks of relays with no circuit board anywhere mean electromechanical. A backbox full of green circuit boards with a displays panel means early solid state. A single long dot matrix display panel means the 1990s golden age. A colour LCD in the backbox means modern.

This matters more than the date on any label, because it determines everything practical: what fails, what a repair costs, whether parts are reproduced, and whether the machine can be diagnosed with a multimeter or needs board-level work.

Where the date information lives

Manufacturers put identifying information in several places, and they are not consistent between makers or decades. Check the inside of the cabinet, the underside of the playfield, the inside of the coin door, and the backbox interior. You are looking for stamped or printed numbers, date codes, and manufacturer plates.

Do not date a machine from the artwork alone. Licensed themes tell you the earliest possible year, not the actual one, and reproduction backglasses and translites move freely between machines. Where a specific machine's numbering system matters, we will document it in that machine's own guide rather than generalise across makers here.

Condition is a separate question from identity

Once you know what you have, grade it honestly. Pinball condition language is informal and sellers use it generously. The useful framework is to score four things separately rather than reaching for one overall word: playfield surface, cabinet, backbox display and artwork, and mechanical function. A machine can be beautiful and unplayable, or ugly and perfect. The two have very different prices and very different fixes.
